Starving Cane Corso Puppy Rescued After Being Fed Fruit and Salad Leaves for Months

A seven-month-old Cane Corso puppy has made a remarkable recovery after being rescued from a home where he was being fed a diet of fruit and salad leaves.

Cayan, who was found in Chatham, Kent, in January, weighed just 4kg when he was rescued by the RSPCA. His ribs were visible and he was struggling to walk.

An examination by a vet revealed that Cayan's diet had caused developmental skeletal abnormalities. He had also been severely malnourished and was suffering from pain and discomfort.

Cayan was taken to the RSPCA's Leybourne Animal Centre for treatment. He was given a nutritious diet and plenty of exercise, and he soon began to put on weight and improve his strength.

After several months of care, Cayan was ready to be rehomed. He has since found a loving home with a family who will provide him with the love and attention he needs.

Gary Gooden, the man who owned Cayan, was banned from keeping animals for 10 years and was handed a 12-week suspended sentence. He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £400 in costs.

The RSPCA is urging pet owners to ensure that their animals are getting the correct nutrition. A balanced diet is essential for a pet's health and well-being.

"Cayan's case is a reminder of the importance of providing pets with a healthy diet," said RSPCA inspector Deborah Rutherford. "He was incredibly lucky to be rescued when he was, and he's now thriving in his new home."

The RSPCA also wants to raise awareness of the signs of animal neglect. If you see an animal that is underweight, has overgrown nails, or is showing signs of aggression, please contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

Animal neglect is a serious issue, and it is important to report it if you see it. By doing so, you could help to save an animal's life.
